Recipe for Soft White Bread

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (or bread flour)
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons (1 packet) instant yeast
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil or melted butter
  • 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F/43°C)
  • Optional: 1 egg for egg wash

Instructions:

  1. Activate the Yeast:
    • In a small bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients:
    • In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt.
  3. Combine Wet and Dry:
    • Gradually add the yeast mixture and oil to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the Dough:
    • Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5-7 minutes.
  5. First Rise:
    • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  6. Shape the Dough:
    • Punch down the dough and divide it into two equal parts. Shape each into a loaf and place them in greased loaf pans.
  7. Second Rise:
    • Cover the pans with a cloth and let the dough rise again for 30-45 minutes until it has risen slightly above the edges of the pans.
  8. Bake:
    • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). For a shiny crust, brush the top of the dough with an egg wash.
    • Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  9. Cool and Serve:
    • Remove the bread from the pans and allow it to cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Tips:

  • For a softer crust, brush the bread with melted butter right after baking.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or freeze for longer storage.
  • Use this bread for sandwiches, toast, or to accompany soups and stews.

Enjoy baking your homemade bread that’s sure to become a household favorite!
