Buttery Gooey Bars with a Crumbly Top

For the crust and topping:

  • 1 cup (225g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

For the gooey filling:

  • 1 can (14oz/400g) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/3 cup (40g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup (100g) light brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the crust and topping:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking dish (9×9 inches) with parchment paper.
    • Mix melted butter, flour, sugar, and salt in a bowl until crumbly.
    • Press 2/3 of the mixture into the bottom of the prepared dish to form the crust. Set aside the remaining 1/3 for the topping.
  2. Make the gooey filling:
    • In a separate bowl, mix softened butter and brown sugar until smooth.
    • Add sweetened condensed milk, flour, vanilla extract, and salt. Whisk until combined.
  3. Assemble the bars:
    • Pour the gooey filling over the crust and spread evenly.
    • Crumble the reserved topping mixture over the filling.
  4. Bake:
    • Bake for 25–30 minutes or until the top is golden brown. The filling should look set but still soft.
  5. Cool and serve:
    • Allow the bars to cool completely before slicing into squares. Enjoy!
