The crispy exterior paired with the gooey, cheesy, and tender beef interior is irresistible.

Ingredients:

  • For the filling:
    • 1.5 lbs (700g) beef (chuck or brisket), slow-cooked and shredded
    • 1 medium onion, diced
    • 1 bell pepper, diced
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced
    • 1 cup cheddar cheese, grated
    • 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese, grated
    • 1 tablespoon olive oil
    • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
    • 1 teaspoon paprika
    • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
    • Salt to taste
    • 1 tablespoon flour (optional, for thickening)
  • For the phyllo dough:
    • 10-12 sheets of phyllo dough (store-bought or homemade)
    • 1/2 cup melted butter or olive oil (for brushing between layers)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Beef:
    • If the beef is not pre-cooked, slow-cook the meat until tender. Season with salt, pepper, and any desired herbs. Once cooked, shred the beef with forks and set aside.
  2. Sauté the Vegetables:
    • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
    • Add onions and sauté until soft, about 3-4 minutes.
    • Add garlic, bell peppers, and mushrooms. Cook until soft and the moisture from the mushrooms evaporates about 5-6 minutes.
    • Stir in the shredded beef, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, black pepper, and salt to taste.
    • If you prefer a thicker filling, sprinkle the flour over the mixture and stir well. Let cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.
    • Remove from heat and mix in the grated cheddar and mozzarella cheeses. The cheese should melt slightly into the mixture.
  3. Assemble the Pie:
    • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Grease a loaf or pie dish.
    • Lay one sheet of phyllo dough into the dish, letting the edges hang over the sides. Brush with melted butter or olive oil.
    • Continue layering phyllo sheets, brushing each layer with butter or oil, until you have about 6 layers at the base.
    • Spoon the beef mixture into the center of the phyllo-lined dish, spreading it evenly.
    • Fold over the overhanging phyllo to cover the filling. Add additional phyllo layers on top, brushing each with butter or oil.
  4. Bake the Pie:
    • Place the assembled pie into the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes or until the top is golden brown and crispy.
    • Remove from the oven and let it cool for 10 minutes before slicing.
