Recipe:

Ingredients:

For the Crust:

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 4-6 tablespoons ice water

For the Apple Filling:

  • 6 cups peeled and sliced apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work well)
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Juice of ½ lemon

For the Crumble Topping:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Crust:
  • In a medium bowl, mix the flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or fork until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Gradually add ice water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together. Form the dough into a disk, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Prepare the Apple Filling:
  • In a large mixing bowl, toss the sliced apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and lemon juice until well combined.
  1. Roll Out the Crust:
  • On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough into a circle about 12 inches in diameter. Place it in a 9-inch pie dish, trimming any excess dough around the edges. Set aside.
  1. Assemble the Pie:
  • Pour the apple filling into the prepared crust, spreading it evenly.
  1. Make the Crumble Topping:
  • In another bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and cinnamon. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple filling.
  1. Bake the Pie:
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
  • If the topping starts to brown too quickly, cover loosely with aluminum foil for the remaining baking time.
  1. Cool and Serve:
  • Allow the pie to cool for at least 30 minutes before slicing. Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream, if desired.
