Introduction:
Nothing beats the taste of homemade gyros with a refreshing tzatziki sauce! These Greek-inspired chicken gyros are filled with juicy, marinated grilled chicken, wrapped in soft pita bread, and topped with creamy, herb-packed tzatziki. Perfect for a quick lunch or dinner, these gyros are packed with flavor and easy to make at home.


Ingredients:

For the Chicken Marinade:

  • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, sliced into strips
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Tzatziki Sauce:

  • 1 cup Greek yogurt
  • 1 cucumber, grated and excess water squeezed out
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill or parsley, chopped
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For Assembly:

  • 4 pita breads or flatbreads, warmed
  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Sliced red onions
  • Fresh parsley or lettuce leaves, for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Marinate the Chicken:
  • In a bowl, combine olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, oregano, cumin, salt, and pepper.
  • Add the chicken strips to the marinade, toss to coat, and let marinate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours in the fridge.
  1. Prepare the Tzatziki Sauce:
  • In a bowl, mix Greek yogurt, grated cucumber, garlic, lemon juice, dill or parsley, salt, and pepper.
  • Stir well, then cover and refrigerate until ready to use.
  1. Grill the Chicken:
  • Preheat a grill pan or outdoor grill over medium-high heat.
  • Grill the marinated chicken strips for about 4-5 minutes per side or until cooked through and slightly charred.

  • Place the grilled chicken on each warmed pita or flatbread.
  • Top with a generous dollop of tzatziki sauce, sliced tomatoes, and red onions.
  • Garnish with fresh parsley or lettuce if desired.
